Apple fans have something new and shiny to get excited about: the iPhone 8 and its bigger sibling, the iPhone 8 Plus.
At its annual press conference, the company unveiled the all-glass iPhone 8 devices, which are faster, sturdier and better at snapping photos.
It comes in two different form factors — the standard 4.7-inch model, and a larger 5.5-inch “Plus” model. “This is a huge step forward for the iPhone,” Apple CEO Tim Cook said on the phone.
It comes in three different colors: silver, space gray, and “a beautiful new gold finish.” The phone is slightly distinct from the form factor of the iPhone 7 — it’s glass on both the front and back — but looks similar.
Schiller says it’s the most durable glass ever put on a smartphone.
New speakers are 25% louder.
The chip improves the camera too. Better focus in low light and better noise reduction.
Camera: 12 MP sensor. Lets in 83% more light and better color saturation.
8 Plus has two 12 MP cameras and optical image stabilization. You can also change the lighting effects after you shoot the photo.
A new feature in the iPhone 8 Plus: Portrait lighting. This lets you alter the lighting of the photo as you take the shot. You can make the background completely dark if you want. There are a variety of other effects you can choose from.
Augmented reality: each iPhone has been customized for AR. New sensors to deliver better AR. Some cool AR app demos like the MLB app that lets you see which players are on the field by holding up your phone.
Wireless Charging
The iPhone 8 will have wireless charging, a first for the iPhone. Both the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus support wireless charging specifically because the back of the phone is glass, Apple’s Eddy Cue said. Though there are several different “standards” for wireless charging, Apple said it’s using the most common standard: Qi (pronounced “chi”).
FaceID
TrueDepth camera system at the top of the display, in the screen’s “notch.” Every time you look at the iPhone it detects your face, even in the dark, using IR. It makes a mathematical model of your face and checks it against the one stored on the phone. All the face data is stored on the device, not a server. Schiller says it can’t be spoofed by a photograph. Apple says there’s a one in a million chance someone can trick the facial recognition.
Face ID works with Apple Pay: double tap the side button and looks at the camera to authenticate. Animoji: animated emojis you can control with your face. There are a dozen different Animojis, including the poop face.
